Rail Artwork
The railway for more than one hundred and fifty years has been a favourite subject for artists. Monet, Turner, Frith and Bourne all depicted 19th Century trains and railways. Gore and Hopper, to name but two depicted the heyday of the steam railway from the turn of the 20th century to the 1940's.
The Guild of Railway Artists was formed in the 1970's to forge a tangible link between artists whose interests include the depiction of the railway scene in all its facets both past and present.
Founder members include renowed artists: Terence Cuneo, Don Breckon, David Shepherd, Philip D Hawkins and Alan Fearnley.
Amongst the aims of the Guild is the furtherance of the artistic portrayal of railways; the staging of Railway Art Exhibitions and assistance in the historical research necessary to accurately portray railway subjects with correct detail.
Since its formation the GRA has mounted successful Rail-Art exhibitions annually throughout the United Kingdom.

Iconic Railway Posters
Dating back to 1926, this t
ravel poster produced for Southern Railway (SR) to promote rail services connecting with Atlantic crossings by the ‘White Star’, ‘the World’s Largest Liner’. The poster shows an illustration of the White Star, seen from below and in perspective to convey the ship’s huge size, and an illustration of an SR train above. Artwork by William McDowell.
Leslie Darrell Ragan (1897-1972) painted heavy industrial equipment the way it might exist on Mt. Olympus. He enshrouded trucks and locomotives with swirling steam and glowing celestial clouds. He painted machinery and buildings at heroic angles and imbued them with an almost divine aura. Speeding trains became works of art under Ragan's inspired vision.

King George V
Part of a set of four chromolithgraph prints, published by The Railway Magazine, c.1905, printed by Alf Cooke Ltd. Leeds. I have found this one to be particularly of interest to my work as the angle this train is printed at is very much what i desire.

Richard Green meticulously prints extremely detailed and researched locomotive drawings.
'Each subject is meticulously researched and is based on the original engineering drawings, but as these are not always correct they are thoroughly checked against photographs, published facts and – if one of the class exists – making a visit to check details.'

Canadian Pacific Railway steam locomotive #136 was Built in 1883, when Sir John A. Macdonald was Canada's first Prime Minister. #136 helped build Canada's transcontinental railway that joined the country together in 1885, and is unique in that it served the CPR from before it's completion right up until the end of the steam operations in 1960.
Old #136 has now entered a third century of indenture, and I am pleased to have captured some of that durability and faithful service in the image 'Steam'n'.

Steam Threshing Era
Paintings of farm engines explore change in the heartland of America with the upcoming power of the steam engine.
Various artists such as Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton and Grandma Moses witnessed the steam revolution in farming communities where work was accomplished communally with the might of steam threshing engines. These artists lived before, during and after the proliferation of the steam engine, and because they were born into or experienced life in rural villages, they were ideally positioned to interpret the impact of steam threshing machines.

Dip Pen Drawing
The idea was that you had one of these engines either side of the field and they took it in turns to pull the plough across, going down the whole length of the field. I don't know how widely these were adopted as the whole setup seems a bit over complex.

Queen Mary
Norman Wilkinson's print The passenger liner 'Queen Mary' raising steam has been bought to my attention cutesy of the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. I enjoy how colourless this piece is which completely describes the day and perhaps the atmosphere... Never the less, a great colour pallet to take forwards in my own work.

Briar Rose
The steam drifter Briar Rose seen here 'steaming with mainmast lowered and mizzen sail set' from around 1917.
I have chosen to look at this piece of work by Edward Smith because of it's detail and vibrancy through that. Perhaps something that i can bring to my own work...
